There's yet still more to do in Edmonton...
So, you’ve gone hiking and shopping. What’s next? How ‘bout my favorite thing to do on any vacation – go to the museum. Hiking is fun, but not for your feet. And, shopping is fun, but not for your wallet ( or, feet for that matter). A museum, on the other hand, is fun, for your wallet and super fun for your brain. I love going to museums on vacations. In fact, my life’s dream is to spend like a week at the Louvre, and other museums in Paris. But, we’re not talking about France, we’re talking Canada – another French speaking country. And, while France is well known for its museums Edmonton has a few of its own. A good museum to check-out would probably be the “Royal Albert Museum” (http://www.royalalbertamuseum.ca/) . If you want to learn more about the region and its history, this is the place to go. The Royal Albert has permanent exhibits in a huge range of subjects divided into three areas: cultural studies, earth sciences, and life sciences. Another choice of museum is a bit different. It’s a living museum. Who doesn’t love a living museum? Nobody. And, if you don’t, you’re wrong. You’re just wrong. Divided into four streets representing four different points in time, and great fun for kids, Fort Edmonton Park “is is a place where time has stopped and is waiting for you to experience life as it was through four historical periods between 1846 and 1929. Go back in time more than 150 years and walk through the days of the fur trade, and the pioneer years of 1885, 1905 and 1920. Costumed interpreters bring the past to life, answer your questions and invite you to experience the best of the period. Take a ride on a steam train, play pioneer games, bake bread the old-fashioned way, shop ’til you drop, or hit the Midway for rides games and more fun – it’s all right here waiting for you.” (http://www.fortedmontonpark.ca/attractions/) And, those are just two great museums you can go to, a list if others is here: http://www.canadaplus.ca/edmonton/guides/mad-about-museums-edmonton/top-10-museums-in-edmonton .
We’ve gone over hiking, shopping, museum-ing. What else is there in Edmonton to do? Well, you could time your trip to coincide with a festival. Festivals are tons of fun and Edmonton has plenty. Between June 1st and August 31st, 2014 ( according to, http://travelalberta.com/Event%20List.aspx) Edmonton has thirteen events and festivals. Such as: Scottish Highland Games. Drink ale and watch burley men throw boulders across a field. And also, “Ukrainian Day”. Listen to traditional Ukrainian music and browse traditional crafts. And then there’s the Big Daddy, the “Edmonton International Fringe Festival”. A huge festival in which one can see very exciting street and stage performers and totally let loose.
As you can see, or have possibly read, Edmonton may not be that beach vacation we have nostalgia for – and thank Heaven it doesn’t! Edmonton, Alberta has a lot more to offer than a beach destination local has to offer. From hiking to shopping, and museums to festivals Edmonton seems to have all the good stuff.
Here’s a list off all the links:
